Regina walks into the barn as I’m lifting the saddle off Tucker’s back. He’s dark with sweat but has a soft look to his eye and lets his head hang low and relaxed.

“Looks like you wore him out,” she says. “I hear you’re a natural at jumping. Time to give up dressage and come over to the dark side.” One side of her mouth tilts up in a sly smirk.

“I almost died when I saw the jumps out there, but she lowered them for me.”

“Sorry I’m late. Guess I missed your lesson,” she says and leads me to the wash stall. “Had a crazy parent call about a financial aid package and cause a big you-know-what storm about talking to the dean. It was a mess. Anyway, I see I wasn’t missed much.”

“Right. When a Grand Prix trainer decides she’s giving you a free lesson, you don’t say no.”

As I hose down Tucker, Regina gathers up the tack and puts it away. With Tucker settled back in his stall, we stand side by side watching him munch hay as the fan blows his mane in all directions.

“It’s peaceful here, right?” Regina looks at me. “Do you ever feel like everything’s OK as long as you’re in the barn with the horses?”

“For a while. Then the crappy outside world seeps in again.”

Regina snorts, then does a double take. “What’s happened now?”

All of a sudden my legs feel like they’re going to give out. Exhaustion washes over me, and I slump over to the tack box and sit. “This place is great, but Tucker can’t stay. It’s my money keeping him here, not the rescue’s training fund, like I said. I told Molly one thing and Vee something else, but the truth is I was desperate to get Tucker out of there before Molly was forced to do something drastic.” My shoulders round, and I collapse into myself like a deflated balloon. “I don’t know what to do.”

Regina nudges me. “Scoot over.” A scent like lavender and lemons wafts from her hair. “You want me to talk to Vee?”

“Nah. Please don’t. It’s not her problem.” I rest my elbows on my knees and stare at the floor. “I have to figure out a way to prove Tucker is not dangerous—that he’s adoptable even. That way, no one will be able to say he’s a liability for the rescue and needs to be put down.”

“He’s quirky, and he’s always been sensitive. But we’ve figured out what sets him off now, so we can manage it. No worse than a lot of horses out there.”

“Yeah, but unfortunately, before we figured things out, he picked the daughter of an irrational crazy woman to hurt. Someone who’s now lawyered up and seeing major dollar signs if she can sue. Even if Mrs. Newman doesn’t really have a case, the publicity for the rescue will ruin everything. Molly can’t fight something like that.” My heels thump against the tack box.

“Maybe after two months here, he’ll be so much better, things will calm down, and Molly can take him back,” Regina says.
